The Loen Skylift at a glance

The Skylift is a cable car from the fjord station at Loen up to the mountain Hoven. The lower station lies directly on road 60. A ride takes 5 to 7 minutes in each direction, and the operator says the cabin leaves at least every 30 minutes. One cabin carries 35 people, and the lift and its buildings are described as universally designed.

The cable car, a hike on the mountain and the via ferrata are three separate things. A Skylift ticket gets you up and down. The via ferrata is a guided climbing package with its own price, covered further down. This is an independent guide, not the website of the operator.

Monday to Wednesday are not listed in the regular block from 26 October, so do not plan on a ride on those days. Weather can shorten a day. On Wednesday 14 October 2026 the ticket shop announced an early close at 19:00, with the Γ  la carte service until 17:00 and the bar until 18:30. Check the operator's page on the morning you go.

Getting to the lower station

By car, the operator gives about 10 minutes from Stryn, 2.5 hours from Γ…lesund and 4.5 hours from Bergen. These are estimates. The bus stop in Loen is at Loen Active, about 500 m (550 yards) on foot from the station. Line 115 from Stryn passes Loen, but its tourist morning run is limited to 15 May to 15 September 2026, so there is no such departure in October.

The Skylift is not the only way up. You cannot drive to the summit of Hoven, because a barrier stands at Oppheim. A paid car park at Holme serves walkers who go up on foot. No fee is listed here, so read the sign on site. Trail times and conditions vary with weather and season, and this guide gives none, so ask at the station before you start.

Cruise passengers: Loen has its own tender landing next to the Skylift, separate from the quay in Olden. A cable car in a different part of Norway is the Fjellheisen in TromsΓΈ.

The classic route takes about 5 to 6 hours with breaks. The operator recommends it from age 12 and sets a weight range for the equipment of 40 to 120 kg. A 12-year-old is not automatically allowed on the route. The published season is 1 May to 28 October, subject to change. Guided groups start at 09:00, 10:00 and 11:00 and should arrive 30 minutes earlier at Loen Marina.

Experienced climbers can use their own approved gear after registering at Loen Marina. A maintenance fee of NOK 250 applies, and starts are after 14:00. Beginners should go with an instructor. The zipline does not run on every day of the season. The 2026 calendar listed Saturdays from 22 August to 10 October, 13:00–18:00, plus a few special days, so that window has ended. No day is guaranteed in bad weather.

Combine it with the valley

The Skylift fits a half day. Loen is also the starting point for the lake Lovatnet and the Kjenndal glacier and not far from the Briksdal Glacier by car. If you want to stay the night close to the lower station, see where to stay in Stryn, Loen and Olden, and for the whole region go back to the Stryn guide. The big ice cap beyond is described under Jostedal Glacier.

Other fjords in Norway have their own cable cars and viewpoints. For the Geirangerfjord see Geirangerfjord.
